Google Algorithm Update 2026: What Changed and Why It Matters

Ranking high on Google is the goal of every website. Your rank on search engines determine how much traffic you will get and how reliable you will appear to your present and prospective customers. The key to ranking high is to follow certain principles. There are some basic principles which ensure a good ranking, but it is also imperative that you keep yourself updated with Google’s Core Updates.

Google Search Central says “Several times a year, Google makes significant, broad changes to our search algorithms and systems. We refer to these as core updates, and we give notice when they happen on our list of Google Search ranking updates.”

The purpose of this blog is to not only inform you about a core update that has already happened in 2026. But to also demonstrate to you, what kind of content usually works toward improving your rank on SERPs. This blog might be specific to Google, but most search engines follow a similar strategy to identify high quality content.

The Discover Core Update, Rolled Out on 5th February 2026.

The most recent core update affects Discover only. Before getting into the details. Let’s answer:

What is Discover?

If you own an Android, go to your home page and swipe right or go to Google, tap on “home” and the content that appears directly below the search bar are part of Google Discover.

Based on your past queries, these pages are curated just for you. They are queryless search items, that is, they appear without you asking specifically for them.

Appearing on Google Discovery may significantly improve your traffic. Therefore, you should take a look at what Google’s recent core update talks about.

How is the Update a Step Toward Google’s User First Policy?

  • Local Relevance  – A user will be shown content specific to his context, that is, more locally relevant content from websites that are based in their country.
  • Reduced Clickbait and Sensationalism – Google plans to show less content that seeks to only lure a visitor and not provide them with any relevant information.
  • Originality and Expertise – Google plans on pushing such content on Discover that are original, and showcases expertise on certain niche topics. Now there may be a number of sites that demonstrate deep understanding on a wide range of topics, Google’s system is “designed to identify expertise on a topic-by-topic basis”.

What has Remained the Same?

The above mentioned points are the new algorithmic updates. What remains the same is that users will continue to receive a personalised Discovery feed based on their creator and source preference.

What is the Lesson Here for a Digital Marketer?

This recent update is not a lengthy one this blog shall also not be and neither should be your wait to start creating quality content that rank high.

This update gives this writer an opportunity to remind her readers about Google’s Search Signals, which we had discussed in our earlier blog explaining how Indexing works and how to have it work in your favour.

The Five Search Signals

Meaning

In the context of regular indexing, this refers to how close your content comes to the user’s inquiry but in the case of Discovery, which is queryless, this means how close your content comes to the user’s interests (which the system determines through their past searches).

Relevance

This is a little similar for regular indexing and Discovery. So relevance means what Google thinks is relevant to you as the user. When you search for something like ice-cream, it is a little unlikely that you want to see pages that have ice cream written on it over and over again. You may want pictures and varieties and addresses of parlors near you. Based on what you have preferred before, Google shows you results that are relevant to you. Same is the case for Discovery content will be shown to you (without you searching for them) based on your past queries, location, language.

Quality

The 2026 update stresses heavily on quality. If you want your content to be pushed on Discovery you have to make sure that what you are putting out is trustworthy, original and in-depth.

Usability

This is the only aspect of search signal that the recent update has not focused upon. However, since Discovery is primarily accessed through mobile phones, it is necessary that your content be mobile friendly to appear on it.

Context

The most important step to ensure that content shown to users is most relevant to them is to keep in mind their location and their language. In regular indexing this has been prioritised, after the 2026 core update, the same extends to Discovery.

Conclusion

The conclusion always remains the same. That is, as a digital marketer your responsibility and your expression is always directed towards actual people, human beings with aspirations and desires. Google is constantly working toward establishing a more meaningful communicative standard between the creator, who is a human to the consumer, also a human. Google is simply a platform wherein the communication takes place. Your goal should be to not impress Google but your prospective clients and customers. Nevertheless, it is important to keep yourself updated with Google and other search engine’s algorithms to best plan your campaigns.
